Heating season preparation: Radiator maintenance and tenant rights
As the heating season approaches, experts provide guidance on radiator maintenance and tenant rights in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
In the Czech Republic, the consumer organization dTest notes that the heating season typically runs from September 1 to May 31, though actual heating depends on weather conditions. Central heating is generally activated when the average daily outdoor temperature stays below 13°C for two consecutive days. If a tenant's apartment remains cold despite the building being heated, it may indicate a system malfunction or incorrect settings, and tenants may be entitled to a rent reduction if the landlord fails to provide adequate heating.
For homeowners and tenants in Slovakia, technical preparation is recommended before turning on the system. Experts suggest checking for air in the pipes, which can cause splashing noises, and bleeding the radiators if necessary. To optimize efficiency, it is advised not to cover thermostatic valves with curtains or furniture and to use short, intense ventilation rather than leaving windows open for long periods. Setting a thermostat to level 5 does not heat a room faster; it simply aims for a higher temperature.
