Heat‑related health risks for seniors and postpartum mothers in Slovakia
Dr. Miriam Kvostková, a geriatrician at Handlová Hospital, warns that excessive sweating in seniors – especially at rest or during the night – may signal infections, low blood‑sugar episodes, heart conditions, hormonal disorders or side‑effects of medication, not merely high temperatures. She advises watching for accompanying signs such as weakness, dizziness, nausea, confusion, tremor, shortness of breath or chest pain and to seek immediate medical help if they appear.
Union health‑insurance doctors, including Dr. Ingrid Dúbravová, note that heat hampers wound healing after cesarean sections, raises dehydration risk and can cause newborns to overheat. They recommend keeping surgical wounds clean and dry, staying well‑hydrated (e.g., with water or coconut water), using cool compresses, dressing infants appropriately for room temperature, and monitoring for infection or overheating signs.
