Summer Heat Hydration Guide: Water‑Rich Foods, Safe Exercise and Coffee Facts

Staying hydrated during summer heat waves requires more than just drinking water. Consuming water‑rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, melons, raspberries and blackberries provides quick internal cooling and essential micronutrients.

Health experts advise a daily fluid intake of about two to three litres for adults, especially when temperatures approach 40 °C. Regular hydration helps prevent symptoms of dehydration – thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, dizziness, reduced urination and dark urine – and supports the body's ability to regulate temperature.

For physical activity in hot conditions, trainers recommend exercising in the early morning or evening, limiting intensity, taking frequent water breaks, and replenishing lost electrolytes. Light, breathable clothing and sun protection further reduce the risk of heat‑related illness.

Research on coffee hydration shows that moderate consumption (one or two cups) does not dehydrate healthy people. Coffee is over 95 % water and, despite its mild diuretic effect, contributes to daily fluid intake. Only excessive amounts or replacing water entirely with coffee could pose a risk.

Overall, combining adequate water intake, water‑rich foods, sensible exercise habits, and moderate coffee consumption helps protect against dehydration and heat‑related health problems.
