Italy faces extreme heatwaves and rising Mediterranean temperatures
Italy and Western Europe are facing extreme heatwaves and rising temperatures. Recent data indicates that July 2026 was among the hottest on record, with significant temperature anomalies across the Mediterranean region. A new wave of intense heat is expected to impact Central and Southern Italy, with temperatures potentially exceeding 40°C in several areas, including Sicily and Sardinia.
The environmental impact extends to the Mediterranean Sea, where rising water temperatures are reaching depths of 40 meters. This warming is causing significant stress to marine ecosystems, including corals and mollusks, and is facilitating the spread of invasive species.
On a global scale, meteorologists warn that a strengthening El Niño phenomenon could lead to 2027 becoming one of the hottest years on record, compounding the effects of anthropogenic global warming.
