Heatwave response in Germany focuses on public hydration

As heatwaves impact various regions in Germany, local initiatives and infrastructure are being utilized to mitigate health risks associated with high temperatures.

In Solingen, the VdK Solingen-Remscheid local association distributed 1,000 bottles of cooled mineral water in the Ohligs pedestrian zone to raise awareness about the dangers of prolonged heat. Heike Herrig, the association's first chairwoman, emphasized the importance of hydration and mutual care, noting that heat poses significant risks to the elderly, the chronically ill, and people with disabilities. Data from the Robert Koch Institute indicates that approximately 12,500 heat-related deaths have been estimated in Germany through early August.

In Karlsruhe, where temperatures have reached up to 37 degrees Celsius due to a heat dome moving from Spain, residents are encouraged to use the city's over 30 drinking water fountains. Additionally, numerous local businesses, including cafes, bookstores, and libraries, participate in the 'Refill' program, allowing citizens to refill water bottles for free at designated stations marked with a blue water drop sticker.
