Heatwaves accelerate grape harvests across Europe

Extreme heatwaves and rising temperatures across Europe are significantly accelerating the grape harvest (vendimia) in major wine-producing regions.

In Portugal, the Douro region has seen harvests begin as early as August, with some areas reporting a 10% to 20% increase in production due to heat-accelerated ripening. In warmer regions like Alentejo and Tejo, harvests began in late July. ViniPortugal notes that climate change necessitates more rigorous vineyard monitoring and more efficient water management.

In France, the Bordeaux region is experiencing record-breaking early harvests for white varieties. At Château Latour-Martillac, the start of the harvest on August 11 marked the earliest date on record for the property. Similarly, in Spain's Rías Baixas region, heatwaves have forced some wineries to adjust their schedules, with some starting early and others waiting for potential rainfall to balance acidity and hydration.

Viticulturists are adapting to these shifts through technological changes, different canopy management practices, and the potential use of more heat-resistant grape varieties.
