Heatwaves batter India's Uttar Pradesh and Turkey's Siirt region

In Banda, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India, temperatures surged above 48 °C in May, reaching 48.2 °C and setting multiple records for the year. The extreme heat has caused birds to fall from the sky, spikes in dehydration, sun‑stroke and digestive complaints at health centres, and chronic electricity outages that leave many residents sleeping on streets and train platforms. Local volunteers, led by bird‑protectors, have placed thousands of feeders and water‑filled containers to help wildlife.

In Kurtalan, Siirt Province, Turkey, daytime temperatures have been reported between 45 °C and as high as 55 °C. Residents avoid streets during the hottest hours, staying indoors or seeking shade in parks and gardens after sunset. Resident Ahmet Resul Aygün said, "Average temperature is 45 °C but out in the open it feels 50‑55 °C. We stay in the shade and drink plenty of fluid." Health officials advise limiting exposure during midday and increasing fluid intake.
