Heatwaves impact cognitive function, appetite, and sleep

Extreme heat during heatwaves significantly impacts various physiological and psychological functions. Research indicates that high temperatures can impair cognitive abilities, such as mathematical problem-solving, and exacerbate mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Physiologically, heat affects the digestive system and appetite. Dr. Lucy Hooper notes that the brain acts as a thermometer, sending signals to reduce appetite to prevent further internal heating. Additionally, blood is redirected from the digestive system to the skin to facilitate cooling through sweat, which can slow digestion and cause nausea. Extreme heat may also increase intestinal permeability, potentially leading to systemic inflammation.

Sleep is also heavily disrupted. High nighttime temperatures prevent the body from reaching ideal sleeping conditions, often causing night sweats and interrupting deep sleep cycles. To mitigate heat in bedrooms, experts suggest simple methods like hanging a damp towel in front of an open window to utilize evaporative cooling.
