Heat exposure reduces appetite as a natural thermal survival mechanism
Scientific research indicates that a decrease in appetite during hot weather is a natural biological mechanism used to maintain thermal homeostasis. Experts explain that the body prioritizes cooling itself over digestion, as the process of digesting heavy meals generates internal heat.
Physiological changes include vasodilation and increased sweating to dissipate heat. During high temperatures, the body redirects blood flow toward the skin to facilitate cooling, which can slow down gastrointestinal functions and reduce hunger signals. Hormonal shifts involving leptin and insulin also play a role in suppressing appetite.
Certain groups may be more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. Those using GLP-1 medications for weight management or individuals working outdoors may also experience heightened sensitivity to these thermal effects.
