Heavy metal concerns raised over North Zealand coastal protection sand

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential presence of heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, and mercury, in sand intended for beach nourishment projects along the North Zealand coast. The large-scale coastal protection initiative, known as ‘Nordkystens Fremtid’, aims to combat coastal erosion, specifically in areas east of Gilleleje.

Medical professionals and cancer researchers have questioned whether the sand being pumped into these areas poses health risks to humans or the local environment. While several consultation responses have highlighted these potential environmental contaminants, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency has dismissed the concerns.
