Heavy metal exposure linked to rising chronic disease risks

New scientific research is highlighting the significant role that heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury, play in the development of chronic diseases. While modern prevention often focuses on blood pressure, cholesterol, and nutrition, environmental medicine is gaining importance as a field of causal research.

Global health data indicates that approximately nine million premature deaths per year are linked to environmental pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) attributed roughly 1.5 million deaths in 2021 specifically to lead exposure. Unlike acute poisoning, the primary concern is long-term, low-level exposure through food, drinking water, and air.

In Austria, the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) describes lead as ubiquitous. A 2020 study in Austria found lead levels above the limit of quantification in 232 out of 411 food samples. Current research is also investigating the use of the natural adsorber zeolite as a potential solution to these growing health challenges.
