Heavy rain and cyclone alert for seven Brazilian states
An extratropical cyclone and a cold front are bringing intense rainfall and unstable weather to the Center-South region of Brazil. At least seven states—Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and Mato Grosso do Sul—are under alert for heavy storms.
In Santa Catarina, the Civil Defense has warned of risks including flooding, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in the Grande Oeste, Alto Vale do Itajaí, North Coast, and North Plateau regions. Rainfall accumulations could reach up to 200 mm in some areas.
Beyond heavy rain, the weather system brings risks of strong winds, roof damage, power outages, and falling trees. While conditions are expected to stabilize and temperatures are predicted to drop significantly by Monday, the coastal areas may experience rough seas with waves reaching 2 to 2.5 meters.
