Texas deploys emergency responders as heavy rains threaten flooding

Severe weather systems are impacting multiple regions, bringing risks of flooding, heavy rain, and extreme heat.

In the United States, Texas has activated emergency response resources following Governor Greg Abbott’s directive to prepare for widespread flash flooding. Over 1,900 emergency responders and 1,500 pieces of equipment, including the Texas National Guard and Texas A&M Task Force 1, have been staged to manage potential rescues. Forecasters warn that hardened, drought-stricken soils may increase the risk of rapid runoff. Other regions face diverse conditions, including extreme heat in the Deep South with feels-like temperatures exceeding 105 degrees, and snow in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

In Zimbabwe, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued warnings for widespread rainfall, lightning, and strong winds. The system is expected to bring localized heavy downpours and could potentially damage crops and infrastructure. Officials noted that while recent rains have occurred, they do not signal the official start of the 2026/27 rainy season.
