Heavy rain and landslide warnings issued for Akita and Tochigi prefectures

Heavy rain warnings have been issued for several regions in Japan, including Akita and Tochigi prefectures, due to unstable atmospheric conditions caused by warm, moist air and rising daytime temperatures.

In Akita, the local meteorological observatory warned of potential landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising river levels from the afternoon of the 19th through late night on the 20th. Forecasts indicate hourly precipitation could reach 40mm, with 24-hour totals expected to hit 80mm in some areas. Residents are also advised to watch for lightning, sudden gusts, and hail.

In Tochigi, the Utsunomiya Local Meteorological Observatory issued warnings for flooding and landslides through late night on the 20th and again from the afternoon of the 21st. Expected 24-hour rainfall totals are projected at 100mm in northern Tochigi and 80mm in the south. Authorities have also cautioned farmers to protect crops and agricultural facilities from potential hail and intense thunderstorms.
