Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Prompt Special Weather Statement for Greater Toronto Area

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved in on Sunday. The advisory, covering municipalities such as Toronto, Hamilton, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Oshawa and surrounding regions, warned that repeated thunderstorms could produce localized rainfall totals of 50 mm or more, raising the risk of flooding, water pooling on roads and reduced visibility for drivers.

A separate Rainfall Warning was also released for parts of the Niagara Region, including Niagara Falls, Welland and St. Catharines, with similar rainfall expectations. In addition, several cottage‑country communities in southern Ontario received yellow rainfall alerts, forecasting 50‑80 mm of rain. Residents were urged to exercise caution while driving and to monitor local updates for possible flood warnings.
