Heavy rain causes vehicle flooding risks in Japan

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding and vehicle submersion risks across parts of Japan, particularly in Fukui Prefecture. Following Level 5 heavy rain warnings in late August, the JAF Fukui branch reported approximately 211 rescue requests related to submerged vehicles, roughly triple its usual volume.

JAF experts advise drivers to exercise extreme caution when encountering flooded roads. A key safety guideline is to turn back if water reaches approximately 15 centimeters, which is roughly the height of a standard sidewalk curb. At this depth, road markings and open manholes become difficult to detect. For larger vehicles, water reaching the halfway point of the tires (approximately 30 centimeters) poses a high risk of engine failure or loss of control.

Authorities emphasize the danger of underpasses, where drowning accidents frequently occur. Residents are encouraged to use hazard maps to identify local underpasses and plan detour routes in advance. In Fukui City, agreements with private facilities allow for the opening of up to seven multi-story parking structures, providing capacity for 3,700 vehicles during emergencies.
