Heavy rain triggers storm alerts and traffic disruptions in Curitiba, Brazil

Intense rainfall on Friday, June 12, affected Curitiba as a cold front and an extratropical cyclone over the Rio Grande do Sul coast created unstable conditions across the state. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a yellow storm alert, warning of rain rates of 20‑30 mm per hour, wind gusts up to 60 km/h and possible hail. Temperatures fell below 10 °C in several areas.

The downpour slowed traffic, increased minor collisions and caused congestion on major routes such as Linha Verde and Avenida das Torres. Two new traffic‑light sets were activated at intersections in the Cidade Industrial de Curitiba, prompting police presence and advice to reduce speed. Starting Monday, a logistics operation to move large concrete beams for the new Curitiba‑Pinhais viaduct will temporarily block sections of Avenida Victor Ferreira do Amaral and Rua Paulo Kissula, further affecting drivers in the Capão da Imbuia and Bairro Alto neighborhoods.
