Heavy rainfall causes flooding and water treatment issues in Brazil
Significant rainfall has impacted several regions in Brazil, leading to infrastructure challenges and public safety measures. In Poços de Caldas, the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (DMAE) reported that 100 millimeters of rain fell within 24 hours at the ETA 5 treatment station, marking the highest accumulation of 2026. This intense precipitation caused water turbidity to increase nearly 54 times, rising from 7.80 NTU to 420 NTU, necessitating adjustments to the water treatment process.
In Campinas, all 25 municipal parks and woods were closed to visitors after rainfall exceeded 80 millimeters over a 72-hour period. The Municipal Company for Urban Development (Emdec) implemented preventive road closures near Bosque dos Jequitibás to mitigate risks from falling trees. Regional rainfall varied, with the Northwest region recording the highest volume at 154.1 mm, while the Southwest recorded 89.8 mm.
