Heavy rainfall causes infrastructure damage and weather alerts in Africa

Heavy rainfall is causing infrastructure damage and increasing environmental risks across parts of West Africa. In Banzon, Burkina Faso, intense precipitation between August 8 and 9, 2026, damaged a bridge on the Banzon-Samorogouan road. Sié Poda, the President of the Special Delegation for Banzon, inspected the site and noted that the rising waters partially deteriorated the structure, compromising traffic on this frequently used route. Technical services will be engaged to assess the damage and restore safe passage.

Simultaneously, in the West Region of Cameroon, authorities have issued warnings regarding a projected 10% to 25% increase in rainfall through October 2026. Governor Awa Fonka Augustine has placed several departments, including Bamboutos, Menoua, and Mifi, in a red zone. The increased precipitation poses risks of soil erosion, flooding, landslides, and water contamination. Residents are being urged to clear drainage systems, treat drinking water, and use mosquito nets to mitigate health risks such as malaria and waterborne diseases.
