Severe weather causes widespread damage and power outages across Brazil
Severe weather across various regions of Brazil has caused widespread infrastructure damage, power outages, and economic losses.
In Paraná, heavy storms and strong winds have disrupted electricity for tens of thousands of consumers. In the northern region, Apucarana and Londrina were heavily impacted, with Copel mobilizing over 1,000 teams to repair broken poles and cables. The weather also caused significant economic damage in São João do Ivaí, where the company Mais Fish reported the loss of approximately 300,000 to 400,000 fish due to a 23-hour power failure that disabled oxygenation equipment.
In Rio de Janeiro, storms have triggered yellow alerts for potential flooding and wind gusts in northern and northwestern areas, including Campos dos Goytacazes. Enel Distribuição Rio reported that while most services in Maricá and Tanguá have been normalized, crews remain on standby for potential new storms.
In Santa Catarina, heavy rainfall exceeding 750mm over two months has led to flooding in Xanxerê and erosion along the SC-156 highway. Meanwhile, in Belo Horizonte, authorities have issued warnings regarding a cold front that may bring hail and winds up to 70 km/h.
