Flooding displaces thousands in Ghana and Nigeria

Severe flooding has caused significant displacement and property damage across West African regions. In Ghana’s Volta Region, the overflowing of River Dayi has displaced more than 3,000 residents in the Hohoe Municipality. Over 400 homes have been affected, with the Zongo community among the hardest hit; reports indicate more than half of the community was submerged. Displaced individuals are currently seeking temporary shelter in locations such as classrooms. Hohoe Member of Parliament Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo has appealed for urgent external support, noting that the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local authorities. Officials have also warned downstream communities to remain cautious as floodwaters move through the river system.

Simultaneously, in Makurdi, Nigeria, a nine-hour downpour has submerged numerous residential areas and businesses. The flooding has destroyed household items and foodstuffs while leaving commuters stranded due to impassable roads. Residents in the Benue State capital have attributed the severity of the inundation to blocked drainage channels resulting from ongoing road construction projects.
