Heavy rains and dam releases trigger flood alerts in Mexico

Severe weather and rising water levels have prompted emergency responses across several Mexican states. In Veracruz, the Secretariat of Civil Protection issued an urgent alert for the Catemaco and San Andrés Tuxtla municipalities due to the scheduled controlled release of the Canseco dam. The dam reached 103% capacity following heavy rains associated with Cold Front Number 2, which has already caused 11 deaths and affected 60 municipalities in the state.

Authorities are conducting preventive evacuations in 11 communities within the Los Tuxtlas region, including Salto de Eyipantla and El Remolino, to mitigate risks from soil saturation and rising river currents. Emergency plans, including DN-III-E and Marina, have been activated to assist residents.

In Campeche, municipal authorities have removed over 31 tons of waste from drainage systems, storm drains, and canals following heavy rainfall. The cleanup operation follows significant flooding in areas such as Ah Kim Pech, where high tides exacerbated water levels. Officials have advised citizens to avoid driving through known flood-prone streets and to refrain from disposing of trash in public spaces to prevent further drainage obstructions.
