Telangana faces heavy rains as depression brings widespread flooding
A deep depression over central India and an active southwest monsoon have driven extremely heavy rainfall across Telangana. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for five districts, orange alerts for eight districts and yellow alerts for the capital region, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rains and strong surface winds.
The downpour has caused rivers, streams and reservoirs to swell. The Medigadda Barrage recorded inflows of about 81,060 cusecs and gates were opened to release water downstream. Irrigation projects such as the Sripada Yellampalli scheme received roughly 66,000 cusecs, raising its water level to 143.86 m and filling about 10.44 TMC of its 20 TMC capacity. Floodwaters have inundated low‑lying areas, washed away roads and halted coal production at Singareni’s opencast mines, disrupting about 16,000 tonnes of output.
Transport links are affected, with vehicular traffic stopped on several routes and diversions in place. A 40‑year‑old man went missing after being swept away in Jampanna Vagu. Rainfall measurements peaked at 9.64 cm in Eturunagaram (Mulugu district) and 188.8 mm in Kumuram Bheem district, illustrating the intensity of the event.
