Heavy rains cause bus accidents and flooding in Peru and Guatemala

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding and vehicle accidents in Peru and Guatemala. In Villa María del Triunfo, Lima, a public transport bus from the Rivera company became submerged in a bypass on Pachacútec Avenue following intense drizzle. Passengers were forced to evacuate the vehicle and walk along narrow sidewalks to safety. The bus remained trapped under water for more than 12 hours, causing traffic restrictions and requiring police intervention to close the access point.

In Guatemala, the Túnico River in El Estor, Izabal, overflowed due to heavy rains, sweeping away a passenger bus attempting to cross a ford in the Esperanza community. While occupants reported injuries and nervous tension, no medical transfers were required and no persons were reported missing. Despite the strong current, footage showed other drivers attempting to cross the area in trucks and trailers. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) have issued warnings regarding rising river levels and hydrological variations in the region.
