Bolivia weather emergency affects over 82,000 families and crops
Severe weather events in Bolivia, including intense snowfall, heavy rains, and strong winds between August 11 and 24, have impacted dozens of municipalities across six departments. According to the Ministry of Defense and Civil Defense, the weather has affected over 82,000 families, with 20,760 being directly displaced or losing their homes.
The agricultural sector has suffered significant losses, with approximately 28,799 hectares of crops damaged and 209,143 head of livestock affected. The Andean region of Potosí has been identified as the area experiencing the most severe impact. Additionally, strong winds in Potosí resulted in one reported fatality.
Beyond agricultural damage, the weather has disrupted transportation and infrastructure. Flight operations at El Alto International Airport were temporarily suspended due to low visibility, and several interdepartmental bus routes were halted. The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) has maintained orange alerts for snowfall and hydrological risks in La Paz, Oruro, Potosí, and Cochabamba.
