Central America faces severe weather as rains cause fatalities and flooding
Heavy rainfall and tropical waves are causing widespread weather emergencies across Central America. In Honduras, the situation has resulted in at least two fatalities in Santa Bárbara and has affected 591 people across various departments, including Cortés and Comayagua. Significant flooding in San Pedro Sula has impacted 282 homes, while in San José de Comayagua, approximately 400 families remained isolated for over 20 days due to rising waters.
Authorities in El Salvador are on high alert as persistent rains and soil saturation increase the risk of landslides and fallen trees. Meanwhile, in Nicaragua, two tropical waves are expected to bring weak to moderate rainfall, particularly in the western and central Pacific regions. Guatemala is also facing increased precipitation due to a stationary tropical wave and low-pressure systems, which may trigger river swells and landslides.
In response to previous drought conditions, Honduras has completed 10 cloud seeding flights using 1,000 liters of silver iodide, with 10 more operations planned depending on weather conditions.
