Heavy school bags causing back pain in Bosnian students
Heavy school bags have become a primary cause of back pain and fatigue among students in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Medical experts warn that poor posture is observable in children as early as the second grade of primary school.
Dr. Aida Vilić Švraka from the Institute for Public Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina emphasizes that the weight, size, shape, and arrangement of items within a bag are critical. While many school bags exceed 10 percent of a child's body mass, health recommendations suggest the weight should ideally not exceed 5 to 10 percent, with 15 percent serving as an absolute maximum.
Improperly worn backpacks can cause muscle strain in the neck, back, and abdomen. Carrying bags on only one shoulder can also impair breathing and cause more significant postural changes than using both shoulders. While well-designed backpacks can help support weight through abdominal and back muscles, improper use remains a significant health concern.
