Heavy traffic congestion on Romania's Constanța coastal road prompts police warnings

On Sunday afternoon, traffic intensified on the main routes linking the Romanian Black Sea coast with Bucharest as tourists returned from the seaside. The INFOTRAFIC centre of the Romanian Police warned of long queues on the A2 highway near Valu lui Traian and between kilometre markers 147‑157, as well as on DN 39 in Eforie Nord. Drivers were urged to use alternative routes such as DN 2A via Hârșova‑Slobozia‑Urziceni‑Bucharest, the A2‑Fetești corridor, or DN 3 via Murfatlar‑Călărași‑Fundulea, and to keep a safe distance and avoid the emergency lane.

Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu said the police can only manage the situation on the ground and that the chronic congestion stems from limited road infrastructure. He noted that an alternative route project (the Techirghiol variant) is currently in the tender stage, and that police forces are deployed at key choke points, but the two‑lane roads cannot be widened without major works.
