Teen Noemi Balzanelli killed in A1 crash near Caserta

On the early morning of 18 July 2026, a serious collision occurred on the A1 motorway between the Caianello and Capua interchanges (kilometre 704.5) near Teano, Caserta. Sixteen‑year‑old Noemi Balzanelli, a resident of Mantova traveling with her parents and younger brother, was killed when her Citroën C3 Aircross struck a heavy vehicle at high speed. The impact crushed the car, trapping the occupants.

Firefighters from the Caserta provincial command, assisted by the 118 emergency service and police, worked for hours to free the family using hydraulic cutters. Noemi died on the spot; her parents and brother were seriously injured, the brother being air‑lifted to a hospital in Naples. The crash caused traffic jams of more than four kilometres while the scene was cleared. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the impact, and the prosecutor’s office has opened an inquiry.

The incident has drawn considerable attention across Italy, highlighting road safety concerns on major highways.
