Hedge funds explore Athens offices amid Greek tax incentives
Hedge fund firms are increasingly looking toward Athens as a potential operational base, driven by attractive new tax incentives in Greece. Millennium Management is reportedly in discussions with Greek authorities regarding a possible office in Athens, including staffing requirements. Verition Fund Management is also reportedly examining the possibility of establishing a presence in the city.
The shift follows the decision by Rokos Capital Management founder Chris Rokos to relocate from the United Kingdom to Greece. Greece is positioning itself as an alternative to London by offering favorable tax treatments; for instance, bonuses for foreign fund managers may be taxed at 5% instead of the standard 15%.
This movement highlights growing competition between financial centers for mobile investment talent and capital. While London remains Europe’s dominant hedge fund hub, managing approximately 10% of global industry assets, tax changes in the UK are contributing to the debate over its long-term attractiveness for wealthy individuals and firms.
