Hedge maintenance: Timing, techniques, and legal regulations
Proper hedge maintenance is essential for plant health and garden aesthetics. The primary pruning period is ideally in late February, before significant new growth begins. A secondary maintenance cut can be performed in summer, typically starting around June 24, to maintain compactness.
In Germany, strict legal regulations under § 39 Para. 5 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) prohibit radical pruning of hedges and shrubs between March 1 and September 30 to protect nesting birds. This restriction ends on September 30.
For rejuvenation of weak or sparse hedges, a heavy cut in late winter is often most effective. When performing maintenance, it is important to inspect plants for existing nests to avoid disturbing wildlife.
