Hedgehog biology and social behavior explained

Hedgehogs are primarily solitary animals that do not live in herds. Their social interactions are generally restricted to mating seasons and the period when mothers care for their hoglets.

Regarding their physical defense, hedgehog spines are not poisonous. The spines are modified hairs made of keratin and do not contain venom or toxins. While they can cause painful punctures or potentially lead to secondary issues like bacterial infections if a spine breaks off in the skin, they are not inherently toxic to humans or pets.
