Hedgehog conservation: Best practices for autumn care

As autumn approaches, experts emphasize that not every active hedgehog requires human intervention. While sightings during daylight can be a warning sign, healthy hedgehogs are naturally active during twilight and night to build fat reserves for hibernation.

Effective support focuses more on habitat than direct feeding. Creating hedgehog-friendly gardens by leaving piles of leaves, twigs, and compost in quiet corners provides essential winter shelters. Maintaining permeable fences allows animals to move between gardens to find food and mates.

Direct feeding should be a limited exception. Improper food can cause digestive issues, and permanent feeding stations may disrupt natural behaviors. If a hedgehog appears apathetic, injured, or unusually thin, observers are advised to contact a specialized hedgehog station for professional assessment rather than attempting to provide food themselves.
