Hedgehog conservation: Tips for German gardeners to protect wildlife

Conservation groups and local authorities in Germany are issuing guidance to help protect hedgehogs, particularly young animals that are increasingly vulnerable due to urban expansion and environmental factors.

In Bavaria, the BN-Kreisgruppe Roth notes that young hedgehogs are often active starting in September and face significant risks. Experts recommend that gardeners avoid using brush cutters near hedges without checking them first and suggest limiting the use of robotic lawnmowers to daylight hours. To facilitate movement between habitats, residents are encouraged to create small openings, approximately 10 cm in diameter, in garden fences.

In the Rhein-Kreis Neuss region, authorities are highlighting the impact of heat and drought, which makes it difficult for hedgehogs to find natural food sources like worms and insects. Dr. Swantje Schumacher recommends providing shallow bowls of fresh water and, in cases of malnutrition, offering grain-free cat food or specialized hedgehog food. Additionally, a local regulation prohibits the use of robotic lawnmowers during twilight and at night to protect these nocturnal animals.
