Hedgehog dietary requirements and safe food options

Hedgehogs are primarily insectivores, meaning their natural diet consists of insects, small invertebrates, and occasional fruits or vegetables. Because of this, they require a diet high in protein and low in fat.

While hay is unsuitable for hedgehogs as it lacks essential nutrients and can cause intestinal blockages or digestive issues, certain vegetables can be used as occasional treats. For example, cooked and plain green beans can be a safe nutritional supplement if provided in moderation.

A balanced diet should be based on high-quality, specifically formulated hedgehog food or high-protein insect-based options, with treats not exceeding 10% of their daily caloric intake.
