Proper habitat management is essential, requiring a secure enclosure of at least 4 square feet with a solid bottom to prevent injury. Owners must also manage cleanliness through regular spot cleaning and weekly full cage cleanings. Dietarily, hedgehogs are insectivores that typically require high-quality cat food supplemented with insects to mimic natural nutrition.

While hedgehogs do not require walks, they are considered higher maintenance than some common pets due to these strict dietary, environmental, and health requirements.
