Sweden to tighten electric scooter regulations

The Swedish government is moving to tighten regulations for electric scooters following a significant rise in accidents. Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson stated that current legislation has failed to keep pace with usage, noting that electric scooter accidents in Sweden increased by 38 percent between 2024 and 2025.

Transportstyrelsen has been tasked with developing proposals for stricter laws, drawing inspiration from Nordic neighbors. Unlike Sweden, where electric scooters are classified as bicycles, countries such as Denmark, Norway, and Finland have different age limits and blood alcohol concentration regulations for these vehicles. The investigation will also consider potential requirements, such as mandatory helmet use.
