Hedgehog quills and associated health risks

Hedgehogs possess between 5,000 and 7,000 quills made of keratin, which serve as a primary defense mechanism. While these quills are not poisonous or venomous, they can cause painful pricks and potential skin irritations.

Although the quills themselves are not a direct source of venom, they can act as carriers for bacteria and fungi. Potential health risks associated with handling hedgehogs include zoonotic diseases such as Salmonella and various bacterial or fungal infections.
