HEDNO invests in drones and sensors to prevent forest fires

HEDNO (ΔΕΔΔΗΕ) is implementing new technological measures to prevent forest fires within its distribution network. The Greek electricity distributor has initiated two major tenders to enhance safety and resilience.

The first tender, completed in late June, involves the procurement of a comprehensive drone-based inspection system for the electricity distribution network, with a budget of €108.3 million and a 36-month contract duration. A second ongoing tender focuses on the installation of an IoT sensor network designed for early warning and detection of hazardous conditions in forested and semi-forested areas. This second project has a budget of €17.2 million and a 24-month duration, with a submission deadline of September 14.

These initiatives follow recent wildfires in Greece. HEDNO has also included hundreds of millions of euros in investments for undergrounding and strengthening the grid in its recently approved five-year plan by RAAEY. These measures aim to increase grid resilience against changing climate conditions, prioritizing vulnerable areas.
