Heel to host traditional procession and dragon slaying ritual

The village of Heel will host its traditional kermis procession and dragon slaying ritual on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The event begins with a religious and cultural procession following Mass at 11:00 AM, accompanied by musical performances from the De Vriendenkrans harmony band, the Animato drum fanfare, and a church choir.

Following the procession, the community will gather at the ‘Oppe Linj’ square near the Sint-Stephanus Church for the traditional dragon slaying. During this centuries-old ritual, the emperor of the Sint-Sebastianus shooting guild will use a sword named ‘Horion,’ forged from damast steel, to slay the dragon. The event serves as a precursor to the local kermis festivities.
