Heerenveen warehouse fire involves Royal Smilde Natura facility
A major fire broke out on Monday evening at a warehouse located on an industrial estate in Heerenveen, Netherlands. The facility, operated by Royal Smilde Natura, is used for the production and storage of margarines, oils, and frying fats.
Large flames were seen erupting from the roof of the building. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the presence of stored frying fat and the risk of the structure collapsing. To combat the blaze, emergency services utilized a 'large water transport' system to move water from a distance and used aerial platforms. Firefighters also had to dismantle parts of the building to reach active fire spots inside.
While heavy smoke drifted toward nearby fields, authorities stated the wind direction prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding areas. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed. Although the fire was brought under control by approximately 21:20, the building remained at risk of collapse. Police were deployed to manage crowds of onlookers who were reportedly obstructing the work of emergency responders. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
