Heidelberg Zoo announces healthy newborn red panda

A male red panda born in early June at the Heidelberg Zoo has successfully completed its first veterinary examination at approximately eight weeks of age. The young panda weighs 1.2 kilograms and is reported to be healthy, well-nourished, and developing according to its age.

During the check-up, veterinarian Dr. Barbara Bach assessed the animal's general health, including its heart, lungs, teeth, and nutritional status. The panda also received a transponder chip for identification purposes. Dr. Bach noted that the cub is becoming increasingly active and is being well cared for by its mother.

While the cub has spent its first weeks primarily sleeping in a nesting box, it is expected to begin exploring its surroundings and attempting to climb soon. As it grows, its diet will transition from maternal care to solid foods, primarily bamboo, though they also consume fruits, roots, and small animals. Red pandas are currently considered an endangered species in their natural habitats.
