Heidi Beirich pleads not guilty to felony fraud charges

Heidi Beirich, a former official at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), waived her appearance at a virtual arraignment in the Middle District of Alabama on Tuesday. Her attorneys entered not-guilty pleas to 14 felony counts, including wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

Prosecutors allege that Beirich orchestrated a scheme to funnel more than $1.2 million to an informant identified as ‘F-9,’ with whom she reportedly had a romantic relationship. The indictment claims that $140,000 from these payments was deposited into joint bank accounts shared by Beirich and the informant between 2015 and 2021. Beirich, who directed the SPLC’s Intelligence Project from 2012 to 2019, is the only individual publicly charged in the federal investigation.

Defense attorney Michael Proctor stated that Beirich is innocent and characterized the case as ‘politically motivated,’ arguing she was targeted due to her work combating extremist groups. The SPLC has separately pleaded not guilty to charges involving the use of $4.1 million in donations to finance informants within extremist organizations. A trial has been tentatively scheduled for October 5, though officials noted the date will likely be postponed due to the volume of evidence.
