Heidi Overton nominated by Trump to lead the FDA

President Donald Trump intends to nominate White House policy aide Dr. Heidi Overton as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Overton, a physician and current deputy assistant for domestic policy, was selected over other candidates including Stephen Ferrara and Jeff Vacirca.

Overton's nomination has drawn attention from pro-life advocates. John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life, expressed optimism that her leadership could lead to renewed scrutiny of the abortion drug mifepristone. Overton's appointment follows the resignation of former commissioner Martin Makary in mid-May.

If confirmed, Overton will oversee critical agency functions, including the Center for Tobacco Products. Recent efforts by the Center have included a 70 percent reduction in the backlog of premarket tobacco product applications during 2025. Her administration will also work alongside HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz to address drug prices and clinical trial reforms.
