Heiligenhaus develops new timber-frame affordable housing

In Heiligenhaus, Germany, a new residential project at Rotdornweg is being constructed using massive timber construction. The building consists of six apartments, utilizing approximately ten tons of polar spruce. The project is a collaboration between the local company Liebrecht Blockhaus and the Finnish firm Kontio.

Mayor Björn Kerkmann highlighted the establishment of the Heiligenhaus Bau- und Immobiliengesellschaft in 2024, a municipal company designed to develop both residential and commercial real estate. Three of the new apartments are reserved for families with housing entitlement certificates to address the local shortage of affordable living spaces.

Member of Parliament Kerstin Griese, who visited the site as part of her summer tour, emphasized that housing construction involves social justice, climate protection, and municipal responsibility. However, Mayor Kerkmann noted a discrepancy in regulations, stating that higher energetic standards are currently required for publicly subsidized housing compared to privately financed projects.
