Heineken launches WhatsApp campaign to combat long voice messages in Romania

A study commissioned by Heineken reveals that voice messages are becoming increasingly long, with 47% of Romanians noting they have grown in length, sometimes exceeding 10 minutes. This trend, described as turning voice notes into “podcasts,” is particularly prevalent among younger generations. Approximately 39% of Romanians send at least one voice message daily, and 48% of Gen Z respondents report sending voice notes more frequently than text messages.

To address the potential decline in face-to-face interaction caused by digital communication, Heineken has launched a WhatsApp-based technology in Romania. Users over the age of 18 who receive a voice message longer than two minutes can redirect it to a private, encrypted bot. In response, the bot provides a message stating “It could have been a Heineken” along with a code for a free beer at a local bar, intended to encourage users to continue their conversations in person.
