Heineken warns UK pubs of potential sales decline due to weight-loss drugs
Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer, has advised British pubs and bars to adapt their offerings in response to the rising popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy.
A company presentation shared with hospitality clients suggests these drugs can reduce alcohol cravings and increase feelings of fullness, potentially decreasing the frequency of traditional multi-pint drinking sessions. To mitigate risks to revenue, Heineken recommends that venues promote smaller portions, such as half-pints, as well as low- or no-alcohol options and small food plates to accompany drinks.
While the company noted that users are not necessarily abandoning alcohol entirely but are making more intentional, premium, and smaller-scale choices, the shift poses a challenge to the beer and cider sectors. Heineken stated it will continue to monitor these evolving consumption patterns through 2027.
