Heiner Brand to receive honorary citizenship in Gummersbach

The Gummersbach city council has unanimously decided to award honorary citizenship to handball legend Heiner Brand. The decision was made during a non-public session on September 30, 2026.

Brand, 74, becomes the seventh person in the history of Gummersbach to receive this distinction. The council cited his deep connection to his hometown, his social commitment, and his contributions to the city's reputation, noting that the honor extends beyond his sporting achievements.

The initiative for the award originated from a citizen proposal submitted by Marc Schröder, Uwe Töpfer, Thomas Braeucker, and Jochen Viebahn. Mayor Raoul Halding-Hoppenheit informed Brand of the decision via telephone following the council meeting. The official ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 21 at Halle 32.
