Heino Stöver advocates for e-cigarettes as a safer smoking alternative

Addiction researcher Heino Stöver, a lecturer at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, is advocating for the principle of 'Tobacco Harm Reduction' to address high smoking rates in Germany.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, 78.5 percent of smokers in Germany prefer traditional cigarettes, while only 9.2 percent use e-cigarettes. Stöver argues that electronic vaping poses less of a health risk than classic cigarette smoking. He suggests that policies should focus on distributing e-cigarettes as a less harmful alternative to reduce mortality.

Statistics indicate that tobacco-related deaths account for 131,000 fatalities annually in Germany, compared to 44,000 alcohol-related deaths. A study by the University of Düsseldorf, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Health, found that more than 30 percent of adults in the country smoke.
