Hekou woman's car repossessed following finance lease dispute
A woman in Hekou, China, had her car repossessed after failing to make payments for four consecutive months. Zhang, the owner, had borrowed 300,000 NDT (approximately 1.14 billion VND) in late 2023 through a financial entity recommended by a car dealership.
Upon the vehicle's seizure in August, Zhang discovered that her agreement was not a standard auto loan but a finance lease contract under a “rent-to-own” model. While she acknowledged the debt, she contested the repossession because she received no clear prior notice. The total cost of the 60-month lease is set to reach 369,210.60 NDT, significantly higher than the original principal amount.
